Confirmations Gone Wild!

A general dentist my friend sees just prompted me to suggest to doctors that you keep track of what you set up for automated reminders. This doctor isn’t one of my clients, because if he were, I’d be having a serious conversation with him about this annoying practice. I can honestly say that I know more than most how massive a problem no shows and last minute cancellations can be….and I also love all the latest technology more than most. Because of this, I have no problem when a doctor tells me he/she wants to start using text and email reminders for appointments. I will admit I still think newer offices should keep to the personal touch until they get a bit established, but that’s a subject for another blog.

My point today is PLEASE be sure you can set these systems to send out a reasonable number of reminders…..especially if you’re using them in conjunction with a personal confirmation call. Believe me when I tell you, 3 texts and a phone call are way too much! Most people already use a calendar, or two, to keep track of appointments. I realize we all have patients who need extra reminders, but no one needs that many! They also don’t need a request for a review of the practice after EVERY appointment and a reminder to “hold the date” 6 months later for their next appointment. I know these systems do have an opt out feature which most patients unfortunately use, but I honestly like ONE text reminder from my dentist, doctor and vet, just to keep me on top of everything. I want all my clients using the latest and greatest technology, including and especially texting and emailing, but be a savvy consumer and keep an eye on your systems……be sure you’re not reminding your patients to the point where they walk out the door and into another practice.
